Project Description

Following the 2011 earthquakes in Christchurch, the Christchurch Central Recovery Plan identified the need for a world-class venue and centre of sporting excellence as part of its redevelopment.

Otium Planning Group was appointed by Ōtākaro (formerly the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority) to assist on various stages of planning for the facility.

Our team members worked on Feasibility and Business Planning, and as advisors to the Design Team. Our role included undertaking a review of the approved facility option, contribution to the development of the project brief, staged reviews of the facility design and ensuring the operational needs and feedback of the Christchurch City Council were captured in the brief.

We also worked with the key project stakeholders to ensure their detailed feedback on the Preliminary Design for the facility was included in the Design Development and Detailed Design Phase of the project.

Due for completion in late 2023, the estimated $301 million Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre will be the largest aquatic and indoor recreation and leisure venue of its kind in New Zealand, catering for the day-to-day needs of the leisure, sporting, recreational, education and high-performance sporting communities in Canterbury, and accessible to people of all ages, abilities and sporting skills.
