Project Description

Otium was appointed by the Mackay Regional Council to prepare a Mountain Bike Strategy for development of the Mackay Region as a signature mountain biking destination, underpinned by a unique and nationally/internationally significant trail town offering based around Eungella-Finch Hatton.

The focus of the study was to understand:

  • What is required to create a nationally significant mountain bike tourism destination?
  • Does the region have the capability to deliver what is needed?
  • If the region is capable, then what are the next steps required?

Our role included Background Research, Site Analysis, Stakeholder Engagement and Information Analysis and Options Development.

The key findings of the study were:

  • Identification of a National/ International destination comprising 100km of trails – 26 individual trails and a 36km adventure trail.
  • Projected visitor spending rising from $6.86M in first full year to $18.1M after 10 years.
  • Estimated $8.9M – $11.6M construction cost.
  • Projected to attract around 6,500 international visitors in first full year of operation rising to 15,600 after 10 years.
  • Projected to attract 12,900 total visitors in first full year of operation, rising to more than 30,000 after 10 years (domestic and international).
