Trails based tourism is growing in importance as many local governments consider recovery from COVID-19. Trails provide ongoing health, recreation and economic benefit. During our recent isolation, trails played a pivotal role in supporting individuals’ ability to get outdoors and exercise.

As restrictions were relaxed, we couldn’t wait to get onto walking tracks and mountain bike trails. Our future holiday choices will increasingly focus on regional and interstate destinations and nature-based tourism.

Many of our recent projects have found the return on investment from trails-based tourism is strong, particularly when including the health benefits delivered. They create sustainable employment, bring new visitors, help keep residents healthy and active, and provide economic benefit through tourism opportunities. Many recent projects indicated Cost Benefit Ratios ranging from 2–5.  As tourism increases following recovery, these projects will offer even greater returns.

OPG has worked with a number of councils who understand this is a smart investment. Having completed feasibility studies, they are progressing significant projects that are well placed to access stimulus funding and will deliver lasting benefits for their communities.
